Setup of the SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager training
The training aims to develop the skillsets needed to guide value delivery in a Lean Enterprise by becoming a SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM).
During this two-day course, attendees gain an in-depth understanding of how to effectively perform their role in the Agile Release Train (ART) as it delivers value through Program Increments. Attendees explore how to apply Lean thinking to decompose Epics into Features and Stories, refine Features and Stories, manage Program and Team backlogs, and plan and execute Iterations and Program Increments. Attendees also discover how the Continuous Delivery Pipeline and DevOps culture contribute to the relentless improvement of the ART.
The Product Owner responsibility
Scrum’s most significant contribution to modern product development is probably to put a content responsible person into the development team. The responsibility works best if the person comes from the business, is a full-time member of the team, and has got the mandate from the organization to own the team backlog.
The Product Owner needs to work closely with the Product Management and other stakeholders—including other POs—to define and prioritize stories, anchor goals, and validate results through reliable measurements. This allows the Solution to effectively address program priorities (Features and Enablers) while maintaining technical integrity.
Ideally, the PO is collocated with the rest of the team, where they typically share management, incentives, and culture. But the PO also attends the relevant Product Management events for planning and Program Backlog/Vision refinement.
The Product Manager responsibility
The Product Manager responsibility often called the Chief Product Owner (CPO), is an obvious responsibility when scaling Agile Product Development. Even if Product Owners in each team have the content authority of the team backlog, a higher level of insight and planning is needed. The higher level is the guide to take final decisions of priorities in teams, and the collaboration and trust between the Product Manager and Product Owners is a critical success factor.
Effective product management is driven by a customer-centric mindset in which the customer is placed at the center of decisions. Supported by the tools and techniques of Design Thinking, this mindset focuses the entire organization on creating desirable, viable, feasible, and sustainable solutions.
